The 29-year-old midfielder, who made history in 2021 as Manchester City’s £100 million signing from Aston Villa, is grappling with a diminished role at the Etihad Stadium. After a lackluster 2024-25 season, where he started just 16 matches across all competitions and was left out of the Club World Cup squad, Grealish’s future with the Premier League giants is increasingly uncertain. Former Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has offered bold advice, urging Grealish to consider a move to a team “no-one’s scared of” to reignite his faltering career, while others have cautioned against a romanticized return to his boyhood club, Aston Villa.
Grealish’s journey at Manchester City began with high expectations. “I am incredibly happy to have joined Manchester City. City are the best team in the country with a manager considered to be the best in the world—it’s a dream come true,” he said in 2021, reflecting his excitement after the record-breaking transfer. His first two seasons delivered success, including three Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph in 2023, where he played every minute of the final against Inter Milan. However, his role has since diminished, overshadowed by injuries, inconsistent performances, and the arrival of players like Jeremy Doku and Savinho. Grealish’s limited game time—1,520 minutes this season compared to over twice that during the Treble-winning campaign—has led to speculation about his next move.
Shaun Wright-Phillips, a City legend, suggested that Grealish could benefit from joining a less intimidating club where he could rediscover his flair. “He needs to go somewhere where he can be the main man again,” Wright-Phillips implied, emphasizing the need for Grealish to escape the tactical constraints imposed by Pep Guardiola’s system.
