Andy Roddick recently revisited a controversial moment from Frances Tiafoe’s 2024 Rolex Shanghai Masters campaign, where the American tennis star found himself at the center of a heated exchange with the chair umpire. The incident unfolded during Tiafoe’s third-round match against Roman Safiullin, in a match that had been fiercely contested until a crucial decision in the third set tiebreak sent tensions soaring.
The match began with both players taking a set each, with Tiafoe winning the first set 7-5 and Safiullin taking the second by the same score. With the match tied at 1-1, the two players headed into a deciding third set, which was closely contested and ultimately reached a tiebreak. At 5-5 in the tiebreak, a moment of controversy arose when Tiafoe attempted to reset the shot clock by casually tossing the ball in the air. Andy Roddick, the former World No. 1 and 2003 US Open champion, weighed in on the incident during his podcast, “Served With Andy Roddick.” According to Roddick, what Tiafoe did was not out of the ordinary. Players often fake a ball toss to reset the shot clock, and this maneuver has become widely accepted in the game. However, Roddick believes that Tiafoe’s casual approach in this instance might have led the umpire to believe that the American wasn’t serious about his toss, which prompted the penalty.
“The easiest way to reset a shot clock is to fake a toss, right?” Roddick explained. “But basically the ruling on Frances was, ‘you didn’t pretend enough for me to make me think that it was a realistic attempt.’ If we’re going by the letter of the law, it should have reset when Frances tossed the ball, no matter what it looked like.”
Roddick pointed out that the inconsistency in enforcing this particular rule is what made the situation even more frustrating. While many players get away with resetting the shot clock through similar tactics, Tiafoe was punished because, in the umpire’s view, he didn’t make it seem like a legitimate attempt. “Frances didn’t do anything different than anyone else has done all year. He just made a mockery of it, and apparently, if you mock it, that’s too far. If you pretend like you’re being serious, then it’s fine,” Roddick added.
The incident sparked significant debate within the tennis world, with some calling for Tiafoe to face disciplinary action for his outburst at the umpire. Many felt that Tiafoe’s reaction, while born of frustration, crossed a line of sportsmanship. Amid the mounting criticism, Tiafoe took to social media to issue a public apology for his behavior.

That is not who I am and not how I ever want to treat people. I let my frustration in the heat of the moment get the best of me, and I’m extremely disappointed with how I handled the situation. That’s not acceptable behavior,” Tiafoe wrote.
Despite the controversy, Tiafoe remains focused on his next challenge. The American is set to compete at the 2024 Almaty Open, an ATP 250-level event, where he enters as the top seed. He will face Daniel Evans in the second round, following a first-round bye.
