Jack Grealish has stayed silent since it was announced he would not be going to Euro 2024, but the Manchester City star wished his team-mates good luck before the Serbia match
Jack Grealish took to social media last night to wish England well in their Euro 2024 opener against Serbia after being left out of Gareth Southgate’s final 26-man squad.
The Manchester City winger, 28, was one of seven players who failed to make the cut for this summer’s tournament in Germany alongside Harry Maguire, James Maddison, Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah, James Trafford and Jarrad Branthwaite.
Grealish was by far the biggest omission, although he did struggle for form and fitness last season. And while he has stayed silent in the wake of that decision, he sent a good luck message to his team-mates on Sunday night.
He shared the image of the Three Lions’ starting line-up against Serbia on his Instagram story with the caption: “Good luck to the lads,” complete with an England flag and blue heart emoji.
England went on to win the match 1-0 courtesy of a superbly timed header from Jude Bellingham in the 13th minute. They face Denmark on Thursday before a match against Slovenia on June 25.
The decision to omit several big name caused a stir in the build-up to the tournament, and Southgate was questioned on subsequent calls on the likes of Marcus Rashford. It was the omission of Grealish, though, which really split opinion across the footballing world.
But Grealish’s Manchester City and England team-mate, Kyle Walker, admitted that he wasn’t totally surprised with the decision given how the winger’s 2023/24 campaign panned out.
