The official list of Russian athletes who will participate in the Olympic tournament has been released, including confirmations and exclusions
Last March 6, the International Tennis Federation allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris under a white flag and therefore as a neutral state, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. A decision that annoyed many Ukrainian athletes and beyond.
Daniil Medvedev and Mirra Andreeva will be present at the Roland Garros Stadium at the Olympic tennis tournament which will start on July 27th, with the women’s final scheduled for August 3rd and the men’s final to be played on August 4th.
In the women’s singles, in addition to Mirra Andreeva, there will be Ekaterina Alexandrova, Veronika Kudermetova and Diana Shnaider. In the men’s singles, in addition to Daniil Medvedev, there will be Aslan Karatsev, Roman Safiullin and Pavel Kotov. In recent days the president of the Russian Tennis Federation, Shamil Tarpischev, had informed that Andrey Rublev, Karen Khachanov and Ljudmila Samsonova would not play at the Olympics. Daniil Medvedev will play men’s doubles paired with Roman Safiullin while Kotov will play with Karatsev.
In the women’s doubles there will be Andreeva together with Kudermetova and Alexandrova with Shnaider. For the mixed doubles there has not yet been a decision but the plans would include the duo of Daniil Medvedev and Mirra Andreeva.
In any case, the final decision will be made shortly before the start of the Paris Olympics. Recall that in the previous Summer Olympics which were held in Tokyo in 2021 a year later than the usual calendar due to Covid, Russian tennis players won three medals in tennis: one gold and two silver medals. In the all-Russian mixed doubles final, Rublev and Pavlyuchenkova beat Aslan Karatsev and Elena Vesnina. In the singles final, Karen Khachanov lost in the final for gold to the representative of Germany, Alexander Zverev.
