The president of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, and former vice president, Yemi Osinbajo, have joined a new social media platform called Threads. This platform is owned by Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Threads was launched recently in over 100 countries and already has 30 million users.
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has expressed his goal of reaching one billion users soon. Within the first two hours of its launch, Threads had two million sign-ups, and this number increased to five million within four hours. In a span of seven hours, the app reached 10 million sign-ups. Zuckerberg shared this news on the app and expressed his excitement for its future development.
Comparing Threads to other social media platforms, it took Google+ 16 days, ChatGPT 40 days, Clubhouse 347 days, Instagram 355 days, Twitter 780 days, and Facebook 852 days to reach 10 million users. Threads is entering the market amid criticisms of Elon Musk’s ownership of Twitter, which has faced controversy recently due to the introduction of tweet view limits.
When asked if Threads would surpass Twitter in popularity, Zuckerberg acknowledged that it would take time but expressed his belief that there should be a public conversation platform with over one billion users. He noted that Twitter had the opportunity but hasn’t achieved it yet.
According to reports, once Threads reaches one billion users, it may introduce monetization methods. However, Meta’s focus for now is on making the product work effectively before considering monetization options.
Currently, Twitter has approximately 450 million users. Many public figures, celebrities, and media outlets have already joined Threads, including Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, The Washington Post, and The Economist.
However, Threads has not been released in Europe due to concerns about data privacy. Meta has faced significant criticism in Europe regarding its handling of personal data, so it may take some time before the platform becomes available in the region.
