The Belarusian seems to have overcome the stomach problems that affected her in the match with Mirra Andreeva, at Roland Garros
Aryna Sabalenka started practicing on grass-courts, after the shocking elimination at the Roland Garros quarter-finals at the hands of 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva. The Russian rising star became the youngest player to reach the semifinals of a Major since Martina Hingis in 1997 at the US Open. Sabalenka was also stopped by stomach problems which caused her suffering from the beginning to the end of the match and which, fundamentally, did not allow her to express her best tennis against Andreeva. The Belarusian tried to solve the problem by listening to the physiotherapist’s advice and taking some medicines, but nothing worked. Andreeva did not let herself be influenced by the situation and won with a score of (5) 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
The stomach pain did not cease in the minutes following the match and Sabalenka was forced to cancel her press conference. At the end of the match, in fact, the 26-year-old Belarusian immediately went to the tournament’s medical staff to try to solve her problems. During the challenge with Andreeva, Sabelenka also drank Coca-Cola precisely with the aim of improving the situation.
“Aryna Sabalenka is unable to take part in the post-match press conference tonight due to an ailment and is with the tournament medical team. The WTA communications team will provide Aryna’s statements which will be transcribed and uploaded to RG media,” the Roland Garros website wrote in a statement.
Now that the clay court season is currently over, the Tour has moved on to the highly anticipated grass-court season, which will obviously culminate at Wimbledon. Sabalenka, to better prepare for the London Slam, has already started practicing on grass, as you can see in the video shared by The Tennis Letter X account:
We recall the best results achieved by Sabalenka at the Wimbledon Championships were the semifinals in 2021 and in 2023. The Belarusian has never won titles on grass-courts (12 on hard-courts and 2 on clay-courts). In her career she played two finals on grass, losing in 2018 in Eastbourne against Caroline Wozniacki and in 2022 in ‘s-Hertogenbosch against Ekaterina Aleksandrov.
